OEE monitoring for existing machines: start with runtime and downtime

OEE monitoring for existing machines: start with runtime and downtime

Many factories operate reliable equipment yet cannot quantify runtime, idle time or downtime. Monitoring can often begin without replacing the machine or PLC.

The vendor's walkthrough covers machine overview, production, downtime, energy and OEE indicators.

A practical small-scale retrofit

Start with a small group of CNC machines, presses or packaging units. Read available RUN/STOP signals safely, capture production counts and timestamp the data at an edge gateway. Record downtime reasons from PLC faults where available or through an operator interface.

OEE combines Availability × Performance × Quality. Runtime signals alone are not enough to calculate a complete, reliable OEE measure.

Engineering checks

Validate downtime against operator logs, distinguish planned stops from breakdowns, and isolate OT connectivity appropriately.
